描述
The CurioDen Classroom Ant Farm Set — 6 Units is a ready-to-run observation lab in one carton: six boxed gel ant farms, six printed observation journals and a printed teacher guide. A teacher can run a multi-week life-science unit without ordering six separate kits, and most districts find this configuration easiest to put on a purchase order.
What’s included in the 6-unit classroom set
- 6 ant farm habitats — ABS base, acrylic viewing panel and sealed gel cartridge, individually boxed for separate stations.
- 6 observation journals — dated prompts, sketch boxes, a prediction page and a data table.
- 1 printed teacher guide — six lesson plans: setup, ant biology, tunnelling, feeding and cleaning.
- 6 colony sourcing cards — a U.S.-focused guide to sourcing a colony safely; live ants are not included.
- 1 storage tote — keeps stations, spare cartridges and journals together between school years.
Curriculum fit: life cycle, ecosystems and observation journaling
Each lesson plan names the question it answers, so a teacher can sequence the unit in one planning period. Three strands run through it: life cycle (which colony stages are visible in a gel nest, compared with reference diagrams), ecosystems (the colony as a system with producers, consumers and decomposers) and observation journaling (predict, observe at a fixed time, measure, sketch, then write an evidence-based claim).
No standards code is printed on the box. District scope-and-sequence documents differ, and a specific alignment claim creates procurement questions during bid review; the guide lists suggested grade bands and each lesson’s driving question so teachers can map the unit to their own framework.
Classroom logistics: six stations, 20–30 minute setup, compact storage
- Setup takes 20–30 minutes once: seat the cartridges, add water to the marked line and place nests in indirect light.
- Six stations serve up to 24 students in groups of four; a class of 30 runs two rotations.
- Daily observation fits a 10-minute slot; the journal prompts keep non-lesson days short.
- Storage is one tote about the footprint of a letter tray; keep sealed spares flat and out of direct sun.
