About CurioDen

CurioDen is an ant habitat and classroom STEM kit brand built for the people who buy science equipment in volume: teachers, science coordinators, education distributors, and museum gift shops. Our tagline is “curiosity, contained” because that is the whole design brief — put a colony where students can actually watch it, and keep everything else out of the way.

Why we exist

Classroom ant units fail for mundane reasons. The kit arrives with live ants that die in transit. The container leaks. The teacher guide assumes supplies the school does not have. By the second year, half the parts are missing and nobody sells replacements. Teachers stop running the unit, and a supplier gets blamed for a product that was never designed for a classroom in the first place.

We built CurioDen around the opposite order of priorities: documentation first, classroom logistics second, and the habitat itself third. The container matters, but a kit that cannot survive procurement review, a substitute teacher, and a summer in a supply closet does not get used twice.

What we sell

  • Gel ant farm kits for single classrooms, home learners, and gift retail. Clear viewing, contained gel, minimal setup.
  • Sand nest ant habitats for multi-week observation, science fair projects, and display cases where students need to see chamber structure.
  • Classroom STEM kits supplied as 6-station and 12-station sets with teacher guides and journals. This is the line most of our school and district accounts buy.
  • Accessories and refills so a kit is never retired for a missing lid or an empty gel pack.

Three commitments we can be held to

1. We do not sell live ants as part of a kit

Every kit ships without live ants. That is a deliberate choice, not a gap. It means a school can buy in June for a September unit, a museum gift shop can stock a shelf without a livestock licence or a temperature plan, and a distributor never holds inventory that can die in a warehouse. Each kit includes guidance for sourcing a colony locally or redeeming a live-ant voucher where state rules allow. Our live-ant shipping policy explains the state-by-state picture in detail.

2. We publish what we can document

We do not claim certifications we do not hold. What we can provide: compliance documentation available on request, including CPC and ASTM F963 test reports; a Prop 65 materials determination; tracking labels on product and packaging; country of origin marking; UPCs and case-pack data for distributors. If a document does not exist for a SKU yet, we say so and give a date. Buyers who need a document before they can raise a PO can ask at .

3. We build for the second year

Classroom budgets reward products that get reused. So we design for refills, publish replacement-part numbers, sell gel and sand separately, and keep the teacher guide available as a digital download so it can be reprinted after the original is lost. The 6- and 12-station sets ship in a shelf box intended for storage, not just for transit.

Design decisions worth explaining

  • Wide, flat viewing windows. A curved viewing surface distorts tunneling. Flat acrylic costs more and shows more.
  • Lids that stay on. The single most common failure in this category is an escaped colony during third period. Our lids are friction-fit with a positive stop.
  • No small decorative parts. Every kit is for ages 6+ with adult supervision and carries the small-parts warning. We do not add loose decoration that a younger sibling can swallow.
  • Teacher guide with a sequence, not a product manual. Three weeks, four checkpoints, one final summary, with prompts for what to write down.

Where we make and how we ship

Our kits are manufactured in China and imported into North America. Country of origin is marked on the product and the carton as required. We ship kits and accessories to the United States and Canada; we do not ship live ants anywhere. Production lead time for stock styles is typically 15–25 days, bulk and private-label runs 25–35 days, plus transit. Current timing for your order is confirmed on the quote.

Who we work with

Individual teachers and homeschool families buy through the shop. Schools, districts, and education distributors work through wholesale with purchase orders, tiered pricing, case packs, and private-label packaging. Museum and gift shops usually take the voucher-ready gift configuration described in our FAQ.
