描述
The CurioDen Classroom Ant Farm Set — 12 Units is the school-wide version of our observation lab: twelve boxed gel ant farms, twelve printed observation journals and a printed teacher guide in one shelf-ready carton. It serves a grade level or science-lab rotation without re-ordering, at roughly six dollars per student.
What’s included in the 12-unit classroom set
- 12 ant farm habitats — ABS base, acrylic viewing panel and sealed gel cartridge, individually boxed so two classrooms can split the set.
- 12 observation journals — dated prompts, sketch boxes, a prediction page and a data table.
- 1 printed teacher guide — six core lesson plans plus six extension labs a substitute can pick up.
- 12 colony sourcing cards — a U.S.-focused guide to sourcing a colony safely; live ants are not included.
- 2 storage totes — six stations each, so two teachers can share one purchase.
Curriculum fit: life cycle, ecosystems and observation journaling
Twelve stations let a grade-level team run the same investigation in parallel and pool results. Three strands run through the unit: life cycle (which colony stages are visible in a gel nest, compared with reference diagrams), ecosystems (the colony as a system with producers, consumers and decomposers, plus a controlled food or moisture comparison) and observation journaling (predict, observe at a fixed time, measure, sketch, then write an evidence-based claim).
No standards code is printed on the box. District documents differ, and a specific alignment claim creates procurement questions during bid review; the guide lists suggested grade bands and each lesson’s driving question so a coordinator can map the unit to the district framework.
Classroom logistics: twelve stations, 20–30 minute setup, shared storage
- Setup takes 20–30 minutes per tote: seat the cartridges, add water to the marked line and place nests in indirect light.
- Twelve stations serve up to 48 students in groups of four, or six classrooms in parallel.
- Lab-period friendly: daily observation fits 10 minutes; extension labs suit a 40–45 minute period.
- Two totes keep ownership clear and stack on a standard shelf; label by teacher when splitting.
