How it works: what you will actually see

Week 1 — the first tunnels

Ants usually start within 24 to 72 hours: surface scratches, then a vertical shaft. Gel holds its shape, so every channel stays open and students can measure it and draw a labelled cross-section by day four.

Weeks 2–4 — chambers

Scratches become rooms as chambers join the shafts — the window for recording division of labour, traffic and wall repair. If the gel clouds or pulls away, switch to a refill pack rather than adding water.

Weeks 4–8 — the long view

By the end of a school term the Starter is a mature cutaway with stored material and a recognisable traffic pattern. Plan one three-week unit plus a fair-project extension; the gel, not the colony, is the limit.

Shipping, live ants and compliance

How many ants should go into the Starter?

15 to 25 workers is a workable colony. A queen is not required to see tunnelling and chamber building, and a smaller colony is easier to re-home.

What happens when the gel runs out?

Replace the cartridge rather than adding water. Refills are sold separately as an accessory pack, which is how most classrooms reuse the frame for a second term.
