Sand Nest Ant Habitat — Medium: Acrylic Observation Formicarium

$49.99

Sand nest observation habitat: washed fine sand, ABS frame, full-height acrylic window, vented lid, …

描述

The Sand Nest Ant Habitat — Medium steps up from a sealed gel kit: an open sand column in an ABS frame with a full-height acrylic window, a vented lid and a tunnelling rod. At 49.99 USD it sits above the boxed-toy band and into range where buyers comparison-shop hobbyist formicariums — but it is still a classroom product, built to be loaded and cleaned by a teacher.

Choose sand over gel for behaviour: sand holds walls, floors and multi-level chambers, so a class can label a real nest diagram against what is in front of them. It asks more of its owner — the sand must stay damp and the unit is heavier — and a sand habitat that dries out is the usual reason it is abandoned.

What’s in the box

  • 1 × sand nest frame, ABS, full-height acrylic window
  • 1 × bag of washed, pre-sifted fine sand
  • 1 × vented lid with access port and spare plugs
  • 1 × tunnelling rod and levelling scraper
  • 1 × 6-page journal with nest-diagram page and sourcing guide

How it works: what you will actually see

Week 1 — setup and first excavation

Adult job first: fill the column, level it and dampen it before ants go in. A rod hole near one wall gives a clean start and shows how a shaft is extended. Keep the lid on while they settle.

Weeks 2–4 — nest architecture

This is the phase sand is chosen for: chambers widen, walls hold, and the section becomes a legible diagram — entrance, gallery, brood room, refuse corner. If the sand pulls away from the acrylic, add water at the edge and let it wick.

Weeks 4–8 — a readable colony record

By week four the layout is stable and the question changes from what they build to how they use it: traffic routes, refuse handling, wall repair after a light disturbance. The front panel is removeable for clean-out.

Classroom and homeschool use

The Medium works as a two-student station or a demonstration unit. It supports the science and engineering practices described in the Next Generation Science Standards — planning investigations, developing and using models, analysing data — described that way rather than as a claimed standard identifier. Because sand shows structure, this is the kit we suggest when the written outcome is a labelled diagram.

At 1.6 kg net empty it wants a permanent spot: assign one student to moisture checks and keep a spare sand bag for the end of term. If you need a habitat per table, the 6-unit classroom set is cheaper per station.

FAQ

Sand or gel — how do I choose?

Sand when the objective is nest structure and labelled diagrams; gel for quick, low-maintenance tunnelling. Sand needs moisture management.

Does it come with live ants?

No. Ships without live ants; live ants are not included and we do not ship live animals. A U.S. sourcing guide is included and a voucher upgrade is offered at checkout.

How often does the sand need water?

Roughly every one to two weeks in a heated classroom: add a little at the sand edge and stop when the surface darkens. Over-watering can collapse a wall.

Can a school district buy this in quantity?

Yes: MOQ 100 pcs per SKU, 50 pcs on stock colorways, case pack 6, 15–25 days for stock and 25–35 for bulk. Ask for the price list and compliance pack.
